Prime Minister Narendra Modi will conduct an aerial survey of the disaster-affected regions of Uttarakhand on Thursday evening, followed by a high-level review meeting to assess the situation and discuss relief measures.
Continuous heavy rainfall has triggered land subsidence and landslides across multiple districts of Uttarakhand, causing significant destruction. According to officials, the state government has sought ₹5,702 crore in relief assistance from the Centre. A central team has already inspected the affected areas.
This year, Uttarakhand has witnessed its highest number of natural disasters since the 2013 Kedarnath tragedy, with widespread damage to villages, heavy financial losses, and casualties of both humans and livestock.
Alongside his Uttarakhand visit, PM Modi will also travel to Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, where he will host Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, currently on a state visit to India from September 9–16. Their meeting in the historic city will highlight the civilizational and cultural bonds between India and Mauritius while reviewing cooperation in areas such as health, education, energy, infrastructure, digital public goods, renewable energy, and the blue economy.
Ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said Modi’s special bond with the state has ensured consistent support from the Centre. “The Prime Minister’s visit will further strengthen relief efforts,” Dhami said after inspecting preparations at Jolly Grant Airport.
In an X post, Dhami added that officials have been directed to ensure all arrangements are completed in a time-bound manner before the PM’s arrival.
